Cooler morning temperatures are bringing a return of an annual problem - icy windscreens.
Some drivers were seen travelling around Dunedin with a small patch of ice removed from their windscreens yesterday, after temperatures dropped below 1degC in the hill suburbs.
Police have warned that those who do not remove all ice from their windscreens before driving could be issued with an infringement notice.
A police spokeswoman said it was "essential" that motorists fully defrosted their windscreens as the chilly weather settles in.
"Drivers need to ensure they have a full range of vision to see clearly out all corners of their windscreen, to ensure their safety and the safety of everyone else on the road.
"While it’s tempting to set off on your journey with just a small patch of frost cleared, this puts you and other road users at risk, considering your visibility is limited."
She said if drivers anticipated a frosty morning, they should set out with ample time to ensure their car windows were defrosted.
"As well, police would encourage people to take extra time when they’re driving in winter, and exercise caution when experiencing rain, ice or snow.
"Often, adverse weather will reduce visibility and increase stopping distances, so please remember to increase your following distances when in traffic."
She also recommended turning headlights on, for greater visibility.
