Invercargill residents will be able to cruise down memory lane and relive the glamour and charm of drive-in movies these school holidays.

After having success with an American Graffiti drive-in movie night a couple months ago, Bill Richardson Transport World venue liaison Michael Gilbert decided to bring back the event for more people to be part of the immersive experience.

Attendees will be able to sit in one of the museum’s vintage cars, enjoy a 60s-style diner banquet with American hot dogs, buttery hot popcorn and creamy milkshakes and watch a classic movie surrounded by the Bill’s Shed — home to Ford letter cars, grunty V8s from the 1930s and 40s and a dazzling 1940 Dodge Airflow Texaco tanker.

Mr Gilbert (30) said he had never had the opportunity to be part of a drive-in, but it was something that fascinated him.

"For some people it will be a step back in time as a lot of people have gone to drive-in movies. So it is a nostalgic event.

"But for others (like me) this is a sort of a new event — I am excited because I have never sat in a car to watch a movie."

About 25 vintage and retro cars would be available for the public to enjoy the experience in and general admission would also be available, he said.

"We had all these amazing vintage, retro cars in the building so we thought we may as well be utilising them — bringing Southland back to the 60s."
