THE curtain comes down on what has been a rollercoaster season at X Factor Cars Riverside Speedway this weekend.
The club has been hit hard with bad weather. Of 13 scheduled race meetings, nine of them (to date) have been weather-affected, a massive blow to the club and race fans alike.
While it’s not all doom and gloom, with the club producing what many describe as the best NZ Saloon Championship ever hosted, in January, it wants to finish on a high, changing this weekend’s single-day meeting into a double header.
Day one on Saturday will be the club’s chance to run the Southland Championships which, have been rain-affected for the past two meetings. Drivers in the youth saloons, production saloons, stockcars and sprintcars will all be contesting the Southland title, along with support grades. This promises to be a hard-fought battle across all grades.
On Sunday, the club will honour members passed with the running of the Memorial Meeting. Stockcars will run the Ronnie Tree Memorial, streetstocks the Cecile Kergozou Memorial, modified sprints the Brett Cooper Memorial while saloons will battle it out for the Rod McLaren Memorial. Family members from these past speedway legends will be trackside to honour their loved ones and enjoy the event.
The season will then be capped off with the Demolition Ramp Derby which should prove popular with last season’s event being cancelled due to Covid-19.
